Yeah the first sentence is “Finding a job in tech by applying online was fruitless”, as if that wasn’t already the case even in the height of the hiring boom in the pandemic and earlier.I got my current job in mid 2020 after applying online to various companies and not hearing back from a single one. One post made for me on the internal YC forums immediately got me a full week of interviews, and a quick post on LinkedIn had an old coworker refer me to the company they work at that lead to immediate interviewing and ultimately a hire. So clearly I was in demand, but applying directly online just doesn’t work period (statistically I’m sure some have gotten lucky with it though).For context, I’m a Staff Engineer with 15 years experience, ex-FAANG, ex-YC startup. My point being that they’re trying to argue that because applying online now doesn’t work, there’s a lack of jobs, but in my experience at least it never worked. I’ve never once in my whole career gotten a job from applying directly, only crickets…I didn’t bother reading the rest of the article since the initial premise was already BS (not to mention the fact their example wasn’t even an SWE), though did I skim it and they seemed imply it was easy to apply online previously.

yeah - the bls data still looks pretty good...as long as you check &#x27;software developer&#x27; and not &#x27;programmer&#x27; :-Pguess BLS likes title inflation at least...

A) any wizards have a free link?B) “let go from an online-marketing role at eBay” doesn’t really seem like an indictment of “software engineering”, but presumably that story is just a short hook.C) reading software engineering is in trouble because of AI has me immediately dubious lol — pretty counterintuitive on the face of it.
